The Commonwealth Minutemen are described as a “Regional Powerhouse” in their prime, even in their current state, dialogue refers to them as an army. Not much of an army if they’re hardly distinguishable from any wasteland scavver except for the hat. The Minutemen have existed as a substantial force for over 100 years since the defense of Diamond City. The Minutemen operated the Castle for 60 years and should have become a well-trained and uniformed fighting force. The Minutemen would have the means and necessity to train their fighters and equip them in recognizable uniforms. Using a combination of pre-war surplus and post-war textiles, the Minutemen are able to do just that. The armor is based off designs seen worn by the NCR, a good example of what post-war production is capable of. If it was not for the Institute, the Commonwealth Provisional Government may have been able to rival other big names in the Fallout setting.
More Details/Compatibility
This is a full leveled list replacer for the Minutemen’s armor. It will likely not be compatible with any other mod that affects the Minuteman armors leveled list. The outfits are all craftable at the Chem Workbench. Each of the armors are balanced roughly around the vanilla Combat Armor. This is so that the Minutemen have a little more staying power in gunfights, or knifefights, or laserfights, or deathclawfights. The armors will also appear on Minutemen based on your level, similar to the spawn rate of vanilla Combat Armor. This mod replaces all non-unique Minutemen outfits. Preston Garvey and The General’s outfits are untouched. None of the outfits have any customization options. They were designed as whole body pieces to give a satisfying visual design and distinction when viewing a group of Minutemen. As of Version 1.2 the helmets have been separated. There are 13 helmets, 26 male meshes, and 4 female meshes (1 unique). All outfits can have ballistic weave applied to them. All outfits can have leg and arm armor applied overtop of them. Yes this potentially makes them overpowered. Use at your own discretion.
Developer’s Commentary:
This is a mod I have been working on for a long time. I’ve been teaching myself how all this stuff works through trial and error so if you see any issues let me know and I’ll do my best to push a fix.
I like the Minutemen. It’s a shame they don’t get any cosmetic love in the base game. I understand that they try to lean heavily into the “Minuteman” name as the reason why they are like this, but I don’t find it appealing or logical. I used the NCR uniform as a base design because they’re cool. There are other mods that put the NCR uniforms on the Minutemen, and there’s even full replacers but I didn’t want to just paint over my boys. I wanted to give them something that was unique to them.
The mod is primarily meant for NPCs to wear, as this is how I use it. I originally built this for myself as a project to see if I could. When everything started going well I reached out to other mod authors whom I got assets from and gathered the permission list to actually publish it in case anybody else was looking for this niche. They do all have 1st person textures but they are limited. There are also fewer female outfits because when I adorn my settlements with guards I command spawn in- male minutemen. I didn’t forget about the ladies as they will generate in the game world, but I didn’t feel the need to recreate the other 23 outfits. If this mod gets popular enough and people want it, I can always make revisions. Just know that in its current state it isn’t optimized to be a player outfit.
These outfits have no customization. This is another one of those things I don’t care about for how I made this mod to be used, but again if enough people want it I will try to add this in. Currently the outfits are full body pieces so that you get a consistent but visually entertaining look.
I didn’t replace Preston or the General’s outfit because I actually like their unique style. I was working on ways to incorporate my own version of a NCR Ranger but then other mod authors produced work I thought was adequate to that mission. I recommend Minuteman Marshal and Minuteman Enforcer as extensions of this outfit pack. One day I’d like to create a deluxe edition that implements work by other mod authors into one cohesive NCWR mod.
As far as balancing goes these armors are all basically reskinned combat armor. This means you could potentially get good armor at level one, but just don’t wear it. The items are cheap to craft so you can mass produce them for cosmetic reasons. They are also Ballistic Weave compatible and accept additional armor overtop. If you choose to you can make some beefed out sets very early. You have that option if you want it, but that’s not the intention.
UPDATE LOG:
Version 1.2: First substantial update. Helmets are now separated from their bodies. All new items are appropriately placed in the Minutemen LL. New items are available through the console menu but not craftable yet. No additional edits were made to the function of the armors, just minor mesh edits. All new helmets are equivalent to a combat armor helmet.
