You go to Concord as Codsworth suggested and you find a group of people holed up in a museum. They seem friendly so you tell them you are looking for your son and they tell you about Diamond City, but then they ask you to risk your life alone against 20 raiders while they stay safely inside and do nothing, few minutes after you just met them. Finally, when the old woman tries to scam you claiming she can see the future, using your son’s memory, you lose it and just open fire and wipe them all out yourself.

Now you are free to play the game however you like, you can take over all the settlements by killing the people there and just calling new ones with your radio beacon if you want.
What you will lose:
– nobody will give you the Flare gun to call for support, not like they were strong anyway
– no artillery, this is slightly annoying but worth it to be free of minutemen quests as far as I’m concerned
– no Sturges, I liked that guy, too bad he fell in with the wrong crowd and had to die

The character is lvl 4 with no perk points assigned. The save is clean, no mods.

a few useful console commands when using a downloaded save game:

player.sexchange – self explanatory;
showspecialmenu – brings up the menu where you can change the name and the starting attribute points;
slm 14 – brings up the appearance menu from character creation, make sure your camera is in 3’rd person and in a good position to see your face before using it;
